Partnered with Green Legacy Hiroshima, SD Botanic Garden, and Yokohama Sister Society, the Japanese Friendship Garden invites the schools of the San Diego Unified School District the opportunity to receive trees that have survived the Hiroshima bombing in an effort to promote peace among nations.

5 schools K-12 will be selected to receive several tree seeds. They will have the opportunity to come to the garden and not only learn of efforts to grow a tree from a seed, but assist in the germination and growth as well. Once the saplings are large enough, they will be transported to the designated schools, where they will continue to grow and receive education on plant care.

Requirements

  • Must be a school within the San Diego Unified School District

  • Must have approval from SDUSD prior to applying (contact Andrea Eaton at aeaton@sandi.net)

  • Must be able to take the trees 3-5 years after germination period

  • Have the proper irrigation system for trees

  • Have the space for up to 5 trees

  • Must be able to continue the proper care once trees have been successfully transported

In addition to the application, please submit a message by your school’s students on what peace means to you. This can be in the form of a summary, poem, illustration, or video. Select a group of students, a class, or make it a school-wide activity!
