What is Yuzen?

The Yuzen technique, which involves painting dye directly onto cloth, was invented in the 17th century during the Edo period in Japan. This art of dyeing kimonos has become renowned for the distinctive and vivid colors only be found in Japan.

Instructor and Artist, Sashi Manabe

Sachi Manabe is a tegaki-Yuzen (a traditional fabric dyeing technique, using resist dyeing and freehand painting, typically known for silk kimono fabric of elaborate patterns) artist. In 2007 She began her training in Kyoto under Kihachiro Yoshida.  Her pieces have been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout Japan.  

About Workshop

Participants will use yuzen pigment to color a cotton table center (50cm x 50cm) traced  a Sachi Manabe’s yuzen original design. Basic pigment colors are included in the kit and participants can create their own colors. After practice, finish with the color of your choice. Assistants will be available to help if needed. After painting, iron to stabilize.
