    What Is Kumihimo (braided cords)?

Since ancient times, Kumihimo has been used for numerous purposes in Japan. Kimonos or wafuku have no buttons and are worn by tying kumihimo. Many of the decorations for Kimono are also made by kumihimo. Techniques were developed to create the various patterns and shapes of kumihimo which were also used to hang swords and assemble armors. There are now hundreds of different ways to make kumihimo and they are deeply involved in Japanese culture, including decorations for temples and shrines, festivals, tea ceremonies, and kimonos.
