In Japan, lacquer—derived from the sap of the lacquer tree—has been used for over 10,000 years as a natural adhesive and protective coating. Its remarkable durability, which resists both acids and alkalis, has enabled ancient lacquered artifacts to survive to this day. Across Asia, where lacquer trees naturally grow, this unique material has long been used to create exquisite architecture and decorative objects. In recent decades, artists throughout Asia, including Japan, have embraced lacquer as a medium for contemporary expression.
For the past 40 years, Kurimoto has explored the creative potential of lacquer in modern art. This exhibition features approximately 30 of Natsuki Kurimoto’s recent works, offering a glimpse into the evolving world of contemporary lacquer art
