The JFGM Martial Arts Day returns on October 20th

Several local martial arts schools in San Diego will gather at JFG to demonstrate their respective arts to the general public. First-timers and enthusiasts alike have an opportunity to experience and learn about a variety of martial art disciplines in a single venue. Demonstration content includes history of each martial art, the common terminology, forms (kata), live demonstrations, and some audience participation.

This event is free with JFGM admission:

MARTIAL ARTS DAY SCHEDULE

Lower Garden | Inamori Pavilion- Demos

11:00am: San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate

San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate is member dojo of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). SKA was founded by Tsutomu Ohshima, one of the last remaining students of Master Gichin Funakoshi, who is widely considered to be the father of modern karate. We are proud of our direct lineage from the founding of karate, as well as SKA’s unique status as the organizer of the oldest, continuously-run karate tournament in America.


12:00PM: San Diego Kendo Bu

San Diego Kendo Bu is one of the oldest kendo dojos in southern California, teaching the "way of the sword" since 1972. Together with the UCSD Kendo Recreations class, the dojo serves the community by combining the traditions and teaching of budo with athletic sport and strong bonds of friendship and camaraderie to students from all walks of life.


1:00PM: San Diego Korean Karate Club

Master Joe Montanez is the Owner and Director of San Diego Korean Karate Club. He began his martial arts journey at the Harvard Korean Karate Club in 1988 and received his 1st Degree Black Belt from Grandmaster Duk Sung Son (World Tae Kwon Do Association) in 1992. He currently holds 6th Degree Black Belts from Chung Do Kwan USA (Grandmaster Ted Hilson), Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan Schools (Grandmaster Dong Hoon Kim), and the World Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan Federation (Grandmaster Hae Man Park).

With 36 years of experience, he conducts weekly adult classes at Doyle Recreation Center near UCSD and provides specialized instruction in women's self-defense at corporate events, for college-bound young adults, and for women seeking to enhance their personal safety skills.


2:00PM: Akido Del Mar

Aikido Del Mar is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the health and welfare of our community by sharing the practice of Yoshinkan Aikido. Aikido is a martial art focused on the redirection of energy rather than employing aggressive force to immobilize attackers. Please find out more about us at www.aikidodelmar.org. We have classes for adults and for children as young as six years


3:00pm: San Diego Kyudo

San Diego Kyudo is a member of the Southern Calif. Kyudo Renmei. We practice Japanese archery using the large war bow or "yumi". Kyudo is one of the oldest martial arts of Japan; the bow predating the sword as the original weapon of the samurai. In its present form, kyudo cultivates the skill and focus of the archer to embody truth, goodness and beauty within each shot.
