Description: During Japanese desserts class, we will be making a traditional summer dessert called "ice cream anmitsu." Anmitsu is a classic combination of red beans, green tea ice cream, fruits, and mochi.

Fu-rin Glass Wind Chime

Description: A fu-rin is a Japanese wind chime that can be hung in your window to catch the breeze. Because a fu-rin is made of glass, the ringing is light and pleasant compared to iron wind chimes and reminiscent of the slow summer days spent eating watermelon and popsicles. In this class, you will paint your own bell and enjoy the classic sound of a Japanese summer in your home.

Description: This class is a Hatha yoga class focusing on postures geared to strengthen as well as increase flexibility and balance. This class will teach proper alignment and breathing along with basic postures.

Description: Welcome to the yoga program at the Graden! The classes have been designed at the beginning level that can be modified for more advanced students. This is a gentle yoga class focusing on postures to awaken and relax your body and mind and a great class to begin your day!

Kiri-E Paper-cutting Class of Dayan the Cat

Dayan is a cat cartoon character by Akiko Ikeda. (Click here for an image.) Kiri-e is the art of Japanese paper cutting. For this project, we will use the flat technique and your finished product will be framed in class. We will be working with sharp X-Acto knives and participants must wear closed-toe shoes for safety. Please bring lunch.

Summer Flower Temari Ball Class

A temari is a colorful and intricately embroidered ball. This class will teach basic techniques to use colored threads in geometric patterns to decorate a ball. These balls make lovely gifts, whether as gorgeous home decor or as ornaments. Please bring scissors to cut thread and a sack lunch.

Sogetsu Style Ikebana Class

Tuesday, June 1, 2010 - 9:30am - 11:30am

Instructor: Yumi Rakers

Fee: $15 drop-in, $50 for 4 sessions

You can learn basic ikebana in our ikebana class. Yumi Rakers is an instructor from the Sogetsu School who will teach you a basic flower arrangement each week. This class is designed for a wide range of talents from novices to advanced students. You may bring your own kenzan, shallow container, scissors, pitchers, trash bags, and flowers and branches.

Uchiwa (Round Fan) Decorating Class

In this class, you'll be decorating an uchiwa, a classic round Japanese fan. The decorating technique you will learn can be used at home on other paper items such as cards and pictures. Please bring scissors and Asian motif rubber stamps if you own any. All other supplies will be provided.

This class is designed for ages 8 and up. Please arrange for childcare if your kids are not participating. Space is limited, so call today with sign up! Pre-payment is required.
